Unit 23- Complementary Therapies
Introduction-
Complementary Therapies are therapies is treatments that fall outside of mainstream
healthcare. Mainstream healthcare are healthcare that are used all the time such as when
you go to your local G.P surgery and are given medications or when you use other services
like physiotherapists, general nurse or a dietician etc. Theses are mainstream healthcare
however complementary therapies is used with the mainstream healthcare's. Some main
stream therapies such as physiotherapist may use complementary therapies as part of their
treatment.
Conventional treatments
Conventional therapy is a Treatment that is more widely used by most healthcare
professionals like hospitals and Gp surgery etc. It is not same as alternative or
complementary therapies, it is different complementary and alternative therapies are not as
widely used.
Examples of conventional therapies are:
Chemotherapy
radiation therapy
Chiropractic
osteopathy
surgery- conventional treatment.
Alternative therapies...
an alternative therapy is a treatment, which can be used instead of conventional treatment
alternative therapy has a belief in the body's ability to heal itself. These treatments are
tailored to the individuals needs, many people choose to use alternative therapies because
they find them helpful. That sometimes medicines make. The practitioner that carry's out
this kind of therapy commits more time to the service user than GP doctor would.
All conventional treatments go through lots of tests by law in order to prove that they work
however most alternative therapies have not been through such testing and there is no
scientific evidence that they work. Some types of alternative therapy may not be safe and
could cause side effects that are harmful.
