Unit 7: Fitness Testing
, Cardiovascular enduran
to work the entire body
period of time where en
produced through aerob
Procedure:
• Firstly participants must warm up to allow oxygen to get to their muscles and to avoid injury.
• Measure out 20 metres across the ground using a long measuring tape and mark with cones.
• Start the CD and the participants run to the next set of cones according to the beeps on the CD.
• If the participant/s arrives at the end of a shuttle before the beep, the participant/s must wait for the beep and then complete another shuttle ru
• If the athlete fails to reach the end of the shuttle before the beep they should be allowed 3 further shuttle runs to attempt to regain their pace,
so that participant must withdraw from the test.
• Get a participant who has stopped doing the test or a teacher to record the level and number of shuttles completed for each participant.
Advantages of the MSFT Disadvantages of the MSFT
Equipment required:
Does not take a lot of time to complete Requires a large space to complete it • Flat non-slip surface
(preferably over 20 metres in length) • Long tape measure (over 20 metres)
• Marking cones
Low cost (only cost for equipment Readings for participants may not be
required) accurate as many people might be • Speaker
completing it at the same time. • The Multi-Stage Fitness Test audio or CD
• Recording device if teacher is filming the test.
Many people can participate at the • Paper to record the results of each participant.
same time
Reliability: As this test is usually done indoors, the test will not be affected by uncontrollable
factors. However, if the test is performed outdoors, unsuitable terrain and rain and wind could
affect the performance of the participants, impacting the reliability of their results.
Validity: This particular test does not accurately test the VO2 of each participant, it accurately tests
the maximum level that participants can reach on this test, as a result it estimates what their VO2
is.
