● Poor farming background in Kansas
● Politics of the time and personality will shape him.

● Choice of running mate is Nixon which appeases the traditional conservatives.

● Nixon energetic and loyal
● Nixon was able to verbally attack the democrats.
● Eisenhower looks far more experienced and stable.
● Republican conservatives voters like :

2. Opposed to federal budgets deficit (government debt)
3. Opposed to high taxes
4. Supports idea of state rights
5. Seems trust worth as he was a war hero
6. Eisenhower started in 1945 Tehran and Yolta, at Yolta he had been critical of the democrats.
7. Critical of containment
8. If he’s elected he would end the Korean War.

● disproves of new deal ( creates a sense of dependency however knows it will be political suicide to dismantle)
● appalled by the amount of money poured in the defence industry ( cuts funding which Is surprising as he is an
ex-general but does it to balance the budget) money saved used for social improvements. Irritates republicans
and democrats.
● Perception that defence cuts will make America vulnerable - Russias a superpower, China a communist
power, Korean war, Mccarthy.

● Pressurise Eisenhower to spend more money than he liked.

Richard Nixon as vice-president

● From a poor background
● Domestic violence
● Father problem with alcohol
● Won a place at Yale but he couldn’t afford it so attended a local college and then won a scholarship at duke university.
● Started a legal career but interrupted for military service.
● In the republican party he has a reputation for hard work and loyalty
● 1946 elected to the house of representatives
● Nicked named as tricky dicky
● Prepared to accuse people of communism even though he knew they weren’t
● 1950 goes into the senate.
● Highly ambitious and competitive



Vice president in 1952

● Loyal and cooperative
● Could be at times partisan
● Eisenhower has to have a degree of pot control, and doesn't want Nixon attacking southern democrats who could actually be
conservative.
● Only member in Eisenhower in the whole cabinet who have served in congress
● Nixon had to be careful between dynamic conservatism and the old guard
● Mccarthy was a personal friend to Nixon
● During vice presidency was remarkable liberal to the issue of civil rights
● When elected in 1968 he had no time for civil rights and makes this very clear.
● Talented and used to statements and international diplomat
● Acts as a goodwill ambassador
● Becomes popular as he goes to Venezuela and there’s a hostile crowd where possible Nixon could be murdered. But plays
into his hands as he returns to a heroes crowd in America
● Lots of resentment in Venezuela and latin states of the American dominance economically.

● doubts about his credibility
● Eisenhower felt Nixon displayed characteristics of being immature.
● In reality Nixon was more focused on politicking ( focusing on elections rather than governing).
● Eisenhower is reelected despite his health problems ( 55 a heart attack, 56 stomach operation, 57 a stroke)
● Nixon is supportive rather than snatching the presidency.
