SOLICITORS AND BARRISTERS:
Solicitors:
Governing body - law society
Regulated by the solicitor’s regulation authority
General practitioners of law
Private practice/firms/employed by organisations
Work consists of conveyancing + drafting
Have full rights of audience since the access to justice act 1999
Role of Solicitors:
Solicitor's governing body is The Law Society, and all practising solicitors must be a
member.
Regulated by solicitor’s regulation authority and considered general practitioners
work in private practice/employed by organisations
work consists of conveyancing, contracts, letters
Training:
Law degree - LPC > TC
Degree - GDL > LPC > TC
Law degree route:
1. Legal Practice Course (LPC) = vocational course + key skills to be a solicitor
2. Training contract (TC) = work experience in a firm for 2 years
Degree not in Law route:
1. Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) = for those who have not got a degree in law for
core modules
2. Legal Practice Course (LPC) = vocational course + key skills to be a solicitor
3. Training contract (TC) = practical experience from a firm for 2 years – 20-day
professional skills course to build on skills from LPC.
