Formal report on the quality management at Strines Stoves Ltd
In this report I will be evaluating the importance of quality management at SSLtd and make
justified recommendations that SSLtd could use to improve their quality management.
There are many tools and techniques Strings Stoves could use to improve their quality
management, so I will only be suggesting the best methods for their company specifically. I
will begin by looking at why Strines Stoves Ltd need quality management and then go on to
make justified recommendations for them to do so.
Quality management and its importance to SSLtd
Quality means when a product or service meets the expectations of the customer.
Therefore, it can act as a competitive advantage for an organisation, such as SSLtd to put
them ahead of competition. Quality management is about ensuring a high quality through
the use of tools and techniques. Quality management is very important to any business
because it can cause a lot of benefits at that organisation. The main benefits are:
Improved productivity
Improved profits (from less waste)
Improved customer satisfaction
Currently SSLtd do not have quality management and therefore are experiencing lots of
issues. One example of this is safety issues. The work place at SSLtd is described as being,
‘chaotic with metal panels and other components cluttering the production area.’ This is not
only a safety issue but also a de-motivational factor effecting workers. Hiezenburg taught us
that in order for a person to be motivated the company must provide other factors first.
Safety and an organised working environment is one of these factors that needs to be met
before an employee is able to be motivated by other factors such as, financial rewards. On
the other hand the case study states that the ‘workforce seems happy because there is a
low staff turnover’. This is not a justified point because not all employees have to leave an
organisation when they are unhappy. From the evidence in the case study it suggests that
productivity is low because of lack of motivation Therefore, it is essential that this is fixed in
order to make the working environment organised, clean and safe for employees.
SSLtd are currently looking to improve their quality management using that at Jaguar.
However, from the figures shown in figure 1 Jaguars profits are far superior to that of SSLtd.
For example, in 2016 Jaguar made £22,208 million revenue, which is what you may expect
from a multinational organisation such as Jaguar. Their revenue increased by 64.3% from
2012 – 2016, this shows huge financial growth within the company. However SSLtd
described their profits as ‘making a small profit every year’. Although we do not have access
to SSLtd’s financial information it is fair to assume, using the evidence, that they are
nowhere near as big as Jaguar. Therefore, it is unrealistic for SSLtd to compare themselves
to such a large and successful organisation. In saying that, there are some tools and
techniques that SSLtd can take from Jaguar and use to improve their quality management.
