P3 : Explain the influences of two predictable and two unpredictable major life events on the
development of an individual

Life events occur in our lives which most generally alter the pathway of people’s lives. They will be
either be predictable or unpredictable and will involve good affects or negative ones. I am now going
to explain two unpredictable life events and two predictable ones and outline the positive and
negative impacts upon each life events.

Two unpredictable:

An unpredictable life event could occur if someone has an accident leading an individual to have a
serious injury or an illness. Unpredictable life event that affected the model Katie Piper significantly
changing her whole perspective of life from the result of an acid attack in which her boyfriend
employed someone to throw acid at Katie. This is an example of an unpredictable life event which
has had a negative impact on Katie’s life. Her whole life came to standstill after the attack. She
suffered immensely from the physical pain and her new appearance as she had third degree burns
and had to have skin grafts. Her new physical appearance left her feeling very self-conscious and had
a massive fear that she would be attacked again. This resulted in her staying in doors for a while
after the attack. She spoke about when she had the confidence to leave the house but didn’t want to
face the public alone so was accompanied by her mum. She kept her hand down as she feared
people seeing her face and discriminating against her. This resulted in a person following her around
to see her face. Her mother and she were thrown out of a shop and others exited a lift when she was
in there. From the acts of prejudice and discrimination from the public it made the acceptance of
Katie’s appearance increasingly difficult and she suffered from agoraphobia and anxiety. All these
horrific challenges brought her thinking to end her life.

However, she managed to turn this negative impact into a positive one as she came out the other
side, she proved the attack didn’t stop her living her life. She became a public figure and set up a
charity called the ‘Katie Piper foundation’ to help others cope with burns, scars and deformities like
Katie did. She wanted to reach out to people to spread awareness about this, to inspire others with
her story and change people’s views in a positive way. That concludes it doesn’t matter if you have
scars, burns and other deformities, you are still a person and you should be respected and treated as
fairly as everyone else. She also filmed a documentary to show her story which had positive
responses and the support of the public. She shared how she now felt proud of who she has become
and hopes she can spread more awareness and hopes to make others feel valued in a similar
situation as Katie to make a difference. Outlining that Katie is truly a role model for others.
