Introduction to Human Physiology — Notes
1. What Is Human Physiology?
Human physiology is the study of how the human body works. It explains
how cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems function and work together to
keep the body alive.
Anatomy = study of the structure of the body.
Physiology = study of the function of the body.
Example: Anatomy studies the structure of the heart, while physiology
studies how the heart pumps blood.
2. Levels of Organization
The human body is organized into different levels:
Cells — The basic structural and functional units of life.
Tissues — Groups of similar cells performing a specific function.
Organs — Structures made of different tissues working together.
Organ systems — Groups of organs working together.
Organism — The complete human body.
3. Major Organ Systems
The major systems of the human body include:
Nervous system — Controls and coordinates body activities.
Endocrine system — Produces hormones that regulate body functions.
