of individualism, democracy reinforces romantic love. (West: 500 years to
make transition while the rest of world, 70 years). Love marriage sweeps the
world.

Defined as a socially approved union between 2 or more adult partners that
regulates the sexual and economic rights and obligations between them. It usually
involves an explicit contract or understand and is entered into with the assumption
that it will be permanent.
Old Legal Definition: “Lawful union of one man and one
woman.”
New Legal Definition 2005: “Lawful union of 2 persons to the
exclusion of all others.”
Notes & Queries on Anthropology 1951 definition: “Marriage is a
union between a man and a woman such that the children born
to the woman are recognized as legitimate offspring of both
partners.”

➶ Regulates mating, reproduction, and child rearing in a socially approved way.
➶ Provides a mechanism for regulating the sexual division of labour.
➶ Creates a set of family relationships that can provide for the material, educational,
