Chapter Overview

How Does Drinking Affect Health?

- For a long time, it was widely believed that moderate drinking was beneficial to our
health and official recommendations from Health Canada were that women and men
limit alcohol to two and three drinks per day, respectively. After thoroughly
reviewing more than 5,000 peer-reviewed studies and two years of research, the
Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction released new guidelines for alcohol
consumption in 2023 that are much more restrictive: no more than two alcoholic
beverages per week as the new healthy drinking limit.
- Alcohol is implicated in loss of life, disability, and poor health; in fact, alcohol causes
nearly as much loss of life as unsafe water and lack of sanitation. Additionally, binge
drinking, which 40 to 60 percent of Canadian university students participate in, poses
various risks to well-being, including alcohol poisoning, which can result in death.

Main point:

- The high rates of binge drinking on college campuses were concerning even under the
old more permissible recommendations; the new far more restrictive guidelines
highlight even greater cause for concern around the adverse effects of alcohol,
particularly for young adults.

, Chapter 16

I. Health Psychology and Behavioural Medicine
▪ Health psychology is about the role that psychology plays in an individual’s
and communities’ health and in preventing and treating illness.
▪ Behavioural medicine focuses on developing and integrating behavioural and
biomedical knowledge to promote health and reduce illness.
▪ Health promotion involves helping people change their lifestyle to optimize
health and assisting them in achieving balance in physical, emotional, social,
spiritual, and intellectual health.
▪ Public health is concerned with studying health and disease in large
populations and designing interventions for health promotion and ensuring
that all populations have access to cost-effective health care, health promotion
services, and health behavioural resources.
A. The Biopsychosocial Model
1. Health psychology examines the biological, psychological, and social factors that
contribute to health, disease and stress.
2. The autonomic nervous system.
B. The Relationship Between the Mind and Body
1. The mind-body connection is bidirectional; The mind definitely affects health and
wellness, but the body also influences the mind.
2. The way individuals feel physically may affect the way they think.
3. Health and wellness may influence psychological experiences such as cognitive
abilities, stress, and coping.
4. In addition to recognizing the interplay between the mind and body, Indigenous
peoples consider spirituality to be important in cultivating well-being. It is
important to be inclusive and culturally sensitive in our models of wellness in
both research and practice. The four dimensions of the Indigenous Medicine
Wheel are: mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual.

II. Making Positive Life Changes
▪ Health behaviours are practices that influence physical well-being, such as having a
healthier attitude about stress, exercising, dieting, not smoking, drinking in
moderation, and practicing safer sex.
A. Theoretical Models of Change
1. The theory of reasoned action states that effective change requires people to have
specific intentions about their behaviours. They should also have a positive
attitude about the new behaviour, and their social group should be positive about
it as well.
2. The theory of planned behaviour includes fundamental components from the
theory of reasoned action, but also includes the person’s perceptions of control
over the outcome.
