Definition

'excessive' sensitivity and/or tooth pain

Characterized: short, sharp pain, arising from exposed dentin that
occurs in response to "stimuli"

Characteristics of dentin

Dentinal tubules open to the oral cavity

large & numerous dentinal tubules

thin, poorly calcified, or breached smear layer

calcified matter that occludes dentinal tubules




Non-sensitive dentin

fewer dentinal tubules at tooth surface are present than in sensitive
dentin

compounds
