The campaign for the Act was one way in which landed property and influence could be attacked by middle-class principles of free trade, competition and personal advancement and by working-class ambitions to end the tyranny of landowners. Section A

Answer Question 01.

Extract A

The 1832 Reform Act was largely a reflection of the changes in the economic and social
structure of Britain. The campaign for the Act was one way in which landed property and
influence could be attacked by middle-class principles of free trade, competition and
personal advancement and by working-class ambitions to end the tyranny of landowners.
With the social and economic changes which had taken place since 1800, political change 5
was bound to follow. But the actual pace of the coming of democracy was largely dictated
by the situation at Westminster. The bill of 1832 only became a possibility when a period
of political crisis followed the end of Liverpool’s governments of 1812 to 1827.
