CLASS 12 PHYSICS – CHAPTER 1
ELECTROSTATICS (FULL PREMIUM NOTES – PART 1)

--------------------------------------------------
1. ELECTRIC CHARGE
--------------------------------------------------

Electric charge is a basic property of matter due to which it produces electric force and
experiences electric force when placed in an electric field.

There are two types of electric charges:
1. Positive charge
2. Negative charge

When two charged bodies are brought near each other:
• Like charges repel each other.
• Unlike charges attract each other.

Example:
Two positive charges repel.
A positive and a negative charge attract.

SI Unit of charge: Coulomb (C)

One Coulomb is the charge present on approximately
6.25 × 10^18 electrons.

--------------------------------------------------
2. METHODS OF CHARGING
--------------------------------------------------

There are three main methods of charging:

1. Charging by Friction:
When two neutral bodies are rubbed together, electrons are transferred from one body to
another.
Example: Rubbing a glass rod with silk cloth.

2. Charging by Conduction:
When a charged body touches a neutral body, some charges flow into the neutral body.

3. Charging by Induction:
A neutral body is charged without direct contact by placing a charged object nearby.
