How far do you agree that international aid constrains development rather
than helping development? (20)
Intro: International aid is aid that takes place from one
country another (donor to recipient) and can take different
forms including projects, money, resources or expertise. It
could be government led or through an NGO. In this essay I
will explore to what extent aid limits development as opposed
to helping a country develop.
Para 1:
Point - Aid can be mismanaged.
Evidence – Uganda – addicted to aid – money spent on 1500 4
x 4 rather than beds in the hospital. Ugandan government
mismanages $300 mill a year (estimated).
Explanation – Government officials taking money for
themselves rather than investing in the hospital.
Link – Donor country/organisation has very little control once
the money goes to the recipient country and as a result aid
can trickle down as well as not go to the right people/projects.
Para 2:
Point – International aid can be effective where it is well
targeted and executed.
Evidence – Water aid in Mali –Cowdung biogass initiative –
community gathered all of their dung. Roughly 40-45 kg of
biogass from dung each month. Renewable source of energy –
in Tungkur.
Uganda donating supplies to Sierra Leone in the ebola
outbreak (2013) to reduce the spread. Medical equivalent -
$600 mill.
Explanation – A well organised, targeted bottom up approach
to a community can be very beneficial. The only issue would
be that they take time and may be on a small scale.
Link – Whilst time consuming, this could be an example of
where international aid is effective.
Pump Aid (UK based NGO) – took donations from EU and no
just UK – sold pumps at £100-£300 to maintain water supply.
1.5 mill. People have gained reliable drinking water e.g.
Zimbabwe and Malawi.
