The paper provides insights into the social worker's typical workday, core values, ethical practices, required knowledge (especially concerning DSM), and essential clinical skills, all contextualized by serving veterans. Insights into Social Work Practice with Veterans: Typical Workday: A social worker attends to veterans served by 4-5 doctor panels in CBOCs. Daily tasks include receiving consults (from doctors, nurses, or walk-ins), conducting assessments/triage, case management, and crisis interventions. Advocacy and Justice: The agency employs veteran justice outreach teams and legal advocates to prevent veterans from being unjustly sentenced in the justice system. Barriers Faced by Veterans: Homelessness, poor knowledge of available programs, and economic/financial challenges hinder veterans' access to services. Social workers face barriers like difficulty keeping veterans engaged (requiring video visits) and noncompliance with medication. Challenges and Positives: The professional satisfaction comes from helping and being at the core of a patient's success story. A key benefit of the VA setting is working with a team and building rapport, contrasting with the potential for burnout in private practice. Desired Change: The social worker would change policies that threaten to drop social work licensing, as she believes rigorous training and licensing sustain the profession's integrity. Knowledge, Values, and Ethics: Values: Essential values include commitment to service and upholding human dignity. Value conflicts often arise around identifying the decision-maker for elderly clients and reporting community scammers who target them. Ethics: Ethical codes are applied in everyday interactions; all codes are considered "tied into one" and must feature throughout service delivery. Knowledge/Skills: Essential knowledge includes a basic understanding of DSM diagnosis , the specific client population (veterans) , and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Core clinical skills are assessment , listening/MI, case management (patient-centered services) , and research skills. DSM Use: While Jammie does not directly use the DSM for diagnosis, she uses its guidance and reviews mental health notes to inform triage and assessment, considering it an essential tool for providing holistic and adequate care.

Interviewing a Social Worker Reflection Paper

Insights into a typical workday of a social worker

The social worker (Jammie) provides insightful information about a typical workday

of a social worker from experience working with veterans. She explains that on a typical day

at work, she works with CBOCs (Community-Based Outpatient Clinics) that carries 4-5

panels visited four-five doctors. A social worker must attend to all veterans served by the

doctors (22:40). On a typical day, a social worker will receive consults referred by a doctor, a

nurse or a walk-in veteran. Others may seek service via phone calls. A typical service

involves attending to a client’s needs, conducting assessment or triage, etc. On a day, Jamila

says a social worker may receive about 5 walk-in clients (Jammie, Personal Communication,

June 13, 2024).

How a social worker deals with clients in their individual environments

According to Jamila, it’s somewhat elusive to manage serving individual client's

needs in distinct environments. However, she says that social work requires patience and a

heart to serve. According to her, while some clients attend sessions, others that the social

worker finds to be case-managed after assessment fail to turn up for sessions again.

Nonetheless, the social worker has to follow them up, set SMART goals for care, and ensure

their needs are optimally met. For some, needs may be met by providing required resources.

Every client has different needs, which the social worker must attend to with patience

(Jammie, Personal Communication, June 13, 2024).

How social worker/agency committed to social/economic justice

According to Jamila, social work plays the advocacy role to ensure veterans do not

get stuck in the justice system over issues. She reports that her agency has programs (e.g. the

veteran justice outreach teams) and legal advocates that deal with these issues in special
