The endocrine system is a complex network of glands and organs that
produce, secrete, and regulate hormones in the body. These hormones
are chemical messengers that travel through the bloodstream to target
organs or tissues, where they influence various physiological processes.
The endocrine system plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis,
regulating metabolism, growth, reproduction, and mood.

Unit Student Learning Outcomes
1. Describe each endocrine gland, the hormone produced, and its effects on
the body.
2. Describe the way hormone secretion in the endocrine system is controlled.
3. Differentiate between the effects of the nervous and endocrine systems on
the normal physiology of the body.
System Terms/Function
1. Adrenal Gland
• Definition: A pair of small glands located above each kidney. The adrenal
glands are composed of two parts: the adrenal cortex (outer layer) and the
adrenal medulla (inner layer).
• Function: The adrenal cortex produces steroid hormones like cortisol and
aldosterone, while the adrenal medulla produces catecholamines like
epinephrine and norepinephrine.
2. Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)
• Definition: A hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland.
• Function: Stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce and secrete cortisol, a
hormone that helps the body respond to stress.
3. Aldosterone
• Definition: A steroid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex.
