This document provides a comprehensive account of the general organization of Balanoglossus, a marine hemichordate commonly known as the acorn worm. It describes in detail the external morphology, body division, and internal organization, highlighting its proboscis, collar, and trunk regions, which represent the tripartite body plan typical of hemichordates. The document elaborates on the body wall, coelomic organization, digestive, circulatory, respiratory, excretory, and nervous systems, along with reproductive structures and developmental stages. Special attention is given to the affinities and evolutionary significance of Balanoglossus as a connecting link between non-chordates and chordates. Illustrated diagrams and labeled figures help readers visualize structural details and physiological mechanisms clearly. This resource is ideal for students of zoology and invertebrate biology, offering a solid understanding of the anatomy, function, and classification of Balanoglossus. It serves as an excellent reference for academic study, practical work, and exam preparation.

General organization of Balanoglossus

Balanoglossus belongs to class Enteropneusta, phylum Hemichordata. It is a
marine animal, widely distributed in all seas of the world. It lives in burrows in
inter-tidal zone and shallow water, though some species may live in somewhat
deeper zones.

The presence of Balanoglossus can be detected by the odour emitted by them,
which resembles that of idoform. An individual lives in a U-shaped burrow
excavated by the proboscis.

External Features of Balanoglossus:

Balanoglossus is a soft-bodied, cylindrical, worm-like animal. The size in
different species varies from 2 to 3 mm to 2.5 meters. Most of the surface is
ciliated.
The body is divisible into three regions, proboscis or protostome, collar or
mesostome and trunk or metastome.
