Past traumas are contributors to a woman's tendency to become an offender. Most
women have been victims ofmental, physical or sexual abuse at some point.Experiences
with abuse or trauma, poverty, mental health illness, substance abuse and
dysfunctionalrelationships are all strong contributing factor that can lead woman to a life of
crime. Past traumas make woman more subsessile to new traumas and abusers. In their
attempt to overcome emotions and traumas they open the door to others than can
continue to victimize them and make them feel unworthy.Women are emotionalbeingsthat
have ahard time dealing with their emotions which potentially leads to depression, anxiety
and mental instability. Continuing the same pattern leads to woman abusing drugs and
alcohol and losingcredibility with their loved ones. Woman often consume themselves in
past traumas that it hinders their ability to parent and provide for their family. This scenario
can push the woman to commit a crime in order to provide for her family.
Why do women who have a prior history of abuse have a higher probability to
become substance abusers?
Woman that have experienced abuse are most likely to become substance abusers in their
attempt to numb their pain and forget their traumas. The effect of the abuse can potentially
lead to mental instability and PTSD where in cases woman resort to drug abuse. To escape
reality or cope with the traumas some self-medicate with narcotics or use illegal drugs such as
amphetamines. Drug abuse causes lack of judgement, mental illness all a combination to make
bad decisions ultimately criminal behavior.“Females are more likely to be incarcerated for drug
crimes and substantially less likely to be incarcerated for violent crimes.27 They are also more
