Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Substance Abuse Prevention and Support
Introduction and Background
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are workplace interventions designed to
mitigate personal and professional challenges that affect employee health,
performance, and well-being. Among these challenges, substance abuse is particularly
damaging. According to the Nova Recovery Center (2020), substance-affected
employees are less productive, more frequently absent, more prone to errors and
accidents, and more likely to experience interpersonal conflicts. The National Institute
on Drug Abuse (2022) estimates the cost to U.S. businesses at $81 billion annually due
to lost productivity.
Beyond economic impact, substance abuse is a deeply human issue. Many employees
struggle in silence, hindered by stigma and fear of workplace consequences. However,
