Alcohols

What are Alcohols?
● Alcohols have the -OH- functional group
● The 1 in propan-1-ol or butan-1-ol tells you where the OH group is in the alcohol

Oxidation of Ethanol:
● All alcohols burn with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water
● Ethanol is renewable as it’s made from biological sources like sugar canes

Microbial Oxidation:
● Ethanol in wine is oxidised by the air with microorganisms like bacteria or yeast
to form ethanoic acid

Heating with Potassium Dichromate:
● Add ethanol to a test tube containing Potassium Dichromate and dilute sulfuric
acid and then heat the test tube.
● The solution would turn green and contain a very dilute solution of ethanoic acid
and other products.
● The green colour forms as Cr3+ ions are present.

Production of Ethanol:
● Fermentation -
○ Yeast is added to sugar in anaerobic conditions which causes the yeast to
produce ethanol and carbon dioxide
