Anglo-French-Indigenous Rivalries
1663
The Dutch have the New York area but it’s won over by the English. That poses a
problem for the French and their trades.
1667
The French negotiated a treaty with the Natives to secure the trade with them
(Haudenosaunee). This hindered other relationships with different tribes.
1677
Covenant Chain of Friendship establishes an alliance with the Anglo-American and
the Haudenosaunee. This does not bode well between the French who want a
monopoly of the trade.
The French rivalled for trade monopoly amongst other things and with these alliances
forming, it complicated things. In 1701, tribes for far and wide come to Montreal to
negotiate with the French for peace (The Great Peace of Montreal). A total of 40
nations attended. The deal was of importance because if peace happened, then
settlers could come over and flourish.
War of Spanish Succession (1702-1713)
The treaty of Urtrecht (1713), in which France got to keep Canada, Cape Breton (Île
Royale), PEI (île st-Jean), St-Pierre et Miquelon, and fishing rights in the region.
Acadia was passed back and forth between France and England. This made them
independent due to the frequent changes in leadership. England gets Acadia which
becomes Nova Scotia. France relinquished their rights of Newfoundland and the
Hudson Bay.
Acadians did not leave because why would they have when this type of thing had
been frequent and they were unsure of how long it would last.
Louisbourg, on Cape Breton Island, is a military fortress and is a strategic asset to the
French to overlook the St-Lawrence area.
War of Austrian Succession (1744-1748)
In 1745 the British take Louisbourg with the help from Massachusetts.
