Update with Complete Solution
A.
1. There are several factors that are influencing labor demand in this scenario. The first one is
the shortage of firefighters needed – soon many will be retiring leaving the department with
approximately ¼ of the force they currently have so that is going to affect the labor demand. There is
also a higher risk of more wildfires, and more firefighters will be needed to help combat that safely. The
quality of human resources can also affect it since you need to know your recruiting goals in order to
hire quality people – that is why the last person before me was fired for not doing their job correctly.
Our state also plays a role in it with the high cost of living and pretty much everything is inflated so this
will also affect the labor demand.
2. A few factors that are influencing labor supply are: The state of the economy which is caused by
inflation which is real these days. Such as people having extra money to even get to work this can affect the
supply. Wages needs to be high enough to be attractive for workers to afford to take care of their families.
Climate is another factor as many people are moving to avoid the extreme weather. Trying to get people to
move to this climate would be difficult.

1. Three of my recruitment goals are:
a. To hire more firefighters to replace the current aging force.
b. Reduce new higher failure rates.
c. Accelerate the hiring process.
Recruitment strategies:
a. Using the highest yield ratio for other firefighters and departments of 80% I would
need at least 31 applications to meet the applicant pool needed.
b. The two types of people that should be targeted for recruitment are: fire science
graduates and “other firehouses or departments.
i. Both of my choices for target groups can be justified by saying they are
interested in the aspects of a fire house and firefighting if they either studied it in college or if they work
there. These candidates would be more likely to be retained easier and do quality work.
c. Two effective methods to reach those two groups. Fire science could be reached by
maybe advertising an info session at a college – putting it on Facebook would be very helpful.
Post flyers around other fire houses for people to see and if anyone is interested, they could
apply easy. Also I would set up a booth at the entrance of other fire houses to advertise the job
opening to everyone coming into work. It may be a closer commute for them then where they
are currently.

1. My three selection methods are phone interview, firefighting knowledge test, and check their
