Unit 2 Assignment - Individual Screening This Paper will discuss the preventative screening for a patient who has the risk factors for diabetes Mellitus type II (DM). The Risk factors for abnormal glucose metabolism includes overweight and obesity or a high percentage of abdominal fat, physical inactivity, and smoking; and is also frequently associated with other cardiovascular risk factors, such as hyperlipidemia and hypertension. It is recommended by the US preventative Service Task force (USPSTF) that practitioners consider screening at a younger age or lower BMI in persons with one or more risk factors for developing diabetes. The USPSTF recommends screening for abnormal blood glucose as part of cardiovascular risk assessment in adults aged 40 to 70 years who have risk factors certain risk factors. These risk factors includes but is not limited to the following; overweight or obese, a family history of diabetes; those with a personal history of gestational diabetes or polycystic ovary syndrome. The people at highest risk are Certain ethnicities such as African Americans, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, Native Hawaiians, or Pacific Islanders are at high risk for diabetes. As a practitioner, I would offer or provide this secondary preventative service to my patients. This type of screening is grade B recommendation because there is certainty that the net benefit is substantial. (USPSTF 2016). The preventive service would be more beneficial than harmful to this risk group.
