Introduction to Project Management
,Introduction to Project
Management
Ten years ago, more than half-million project managers were
executing about a million software projects each year, producing
software worth $600 billion according to Jalote (2002). That number
has grown today to more than a million software project managers
producing more than a trillion dollars worth of IT software—possibly
making IT Project Management one of the most important topics of
interest across the business and technology landscape. IT project
management is a top skill highly sought in the marketplace in
virtually any industry.

Project
What is a project? Whether you are cooking a meal, building a boat,
planning a 50th wedding anniversary for parents or upgrading your
operating system, you are engaged in a project. A historic review of
Webster dictionary for the term project reveals that this term has
evolved from being defined as "an idea" in 1910 to a "specific plan
or design" today (2018, Webster.com). In today's competitive
business world "an idea" must be investigated and acted upon
quickly. Largely due to the maturity of the project management field
today, a project "idea" can be quickly planned and executed and
turned into successful results.
, Projects are typically associated with large undertakings. Such
initiatives are innovative and complex and required a structured
methodology to deliver results. This is what project management is
all about.
Projects are typically associated with large undertakings. Such
initiatives are innovative and complex and require a structured
methodology to deliver results. This is what project management is
all about. For purposes of our course, we define a project as an
agreement to deliver goods or services within a fixed
schedule and a stipulated amount of money. The importance of
clearly defining the scope of "goods and services" being delivered
cannot be understated. Confusion surrounding the scope of the
project is the key reason projects fail.
Projects are undertaken at all levels of the organization. They may
involve a single person or a group of people; the duration may
range from a few weeks to several years to complete. Projects may
involve a single unit of an organization or cross organizational
boundaries as in joint ventures, partnerships and corporations. As
