I. Web is not the Internet
a. Internet is a global data communication network
b. Web is one of the many technologies that use the internet to distribute
data
c. World Wide Web (just the Web) - collection of HTML docs, images, vids,
sound files, that can be linked to each other and accessed over the
internet using a protocol called HTTP
d. Web browser - program that communicates with a web server and
displays web pages
e. Hypertext - describe a comp system that could store literary docs, link
them in logical relationships, allow readers to comment and annotate on
what they read
II. Web Sites
a. Web site = contains a collection of related info organized and formatted
so it can be accessed using a browser
b. Web server - internet based computer that stores Web site content and
accepts requests from browsers
c. Web page - based on HTML source document, stored as a file on a web
server
III. Hypertext Links
a. Web pages are connected by hypertext links
b. Links are commonly indicated by underlined or colored text, or a photo,
button, tab, or object
c. Unidirectional links
i. Doc A links to Doc B, not vice versa
d. Bidirectional links
i. Connects two docs using a two-way link that can be followed from
either document
IV. URLs
a. Every web page has a unique address called URL (uniform resource
locator)
i. Begin with http://
ii. File name of a specific page appears last in the url
iii. Some contain a search rather than the name of a html doc
b. Rules of correctly typing one
i. Never contains spaces
ii. http://, can be omitted
iii. Always use a forward slash
iv. Duplicate the URLs capitalization exactly- some are case sensitive
v. Links aren't urls
c. URLs contain a domain name

maintained in the history list or browser cache
i. Use it to not leave a trail that can be seen by
others who gain access to a device you recently
used
e. Browsers ask to save passwords when you log in to sites
i. Risk - anyone who gains access to your device can
easily log in to your password protected sites b/c
passwords are supplied by the browser
