PART B – LOGISITCS MANAGEMENT: COMPETITIVENESS &
COMPETITION

Globalisation has changed the way to understand business. Whatever you do, the placement
could be fix anywhere around the world.

1. SCM: Business vision
There are two main visions inside of it.
a) Information process à business planning helps to manage all the process needed to
deliver goods to customers. In order to be able to handle all this information, we need a a
ERP such as SAP, depending on the type of logistics the company wants to work with.
Activities needed in order to be able to produce a good are:
1. Transport
2. Warehousing
3. Inventory
4. Handling
5. Packaging
All this activities produce value for logistic chain. All the diLerent costs that each activity has, will
need to be reflected in the total price of the final product (between a 6 and 8%, maximum 10%).

There are times where a same company will use diLerent type of warehouses such as
Mediamarkt, and they will also work with diLerent companies in order to be able to have an
economic activity.

1.1. How to become competitive in logistic?
Some of the keys in order to be competitive are.
a) Rotation time à if it is small, where cost are in assets, there is need to rotat because the
delivery time of it, is high. A just in time strategy will compense the lost of production.

The customer can be (if we consider an example where we are in a secretary department of a
university):
a) Internal à teachers, IT workers, bibliary,…
b) Intermediate à students
c) External à other teachers or people IT coming from outside universities.

1.2. 4R principales for logistic
Will help to deliver the product in:
1. Right place.
2. Right time.
3. Right conditions (quality).
4. Right customer.
This will help to be more convinced that the customers will be satisfied with the final products.

*****EXAMEN*****
How many party logistics are found nowadays?
a) 1PL à the company manages its own logistical operations. Ex.: Amazon
b) 2PL à an external transport company that transport for other companies. Ex.: DHL
c) 3PL à a company that oLers logistical services such as storage, transport, inventory
management,... Ex.: Amazon

d) 4PL à you must rely on it and take care of everything including the selection of the 3PL.
The person contracting is the responsible of the logistics.
e) 5PL à handles the entire supply chain, this PL the final responsible of the logistics
including the selection of the 4PL.
The quotation o<er will specify the service in which the model will be contracted. It is a document
with an introduction, legal considerations, conclution, etc. This will recive technical and
economical oLers which will allow to decide in the diLerent companies that will be selected.

To take into account all this previous things, KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) need to be
considered. Some KPI considered:
a) Kg/km transported à if they increase, we should consider if there are enough resources
to provide this potential increase.
b) Orders delivered on time
c) Returned orders à if the tendency is negative, we should take into consideration which is
the main problem of that.
d) Cost/deliver à if it has increased, investigate the problem should be done.

Which considerations we need to take into account when selecting the best partners logistics
because of business?
1. Location
2. Cost
3. Packaging
4. Scalability
*****EXAMEN*****

Broker à it has lots of warehouses but does not produce any type of product. Ex.: Amazon.

2. Competition risk management
There are two type of risks:
a) Strategic à unclear business decisions, new product introduction, changes in
management and financial challenges.
b) Operational à human errors, system failures, inadequate internal processes and data
breaches.

2.1. Critical factors to the present demand
a) Service
b) Quality
c) Cost
d) Sustainability
e) Society
f) Agility.
When talking about time, we need ot check what things will make our service to be handled in a
less period of time.

2.2. Capabilities and atributes
As more capabilities invested, major service will be provided but the cost will be increased.

They main capability to be implemented in the SCM, is service quality followed by strategic
management, operation management and cost management.
