Definition of medical diagnosis: a breathing disorder resulting from lung immaturity
and lack of alveolar surfactant.



Common sign/symptoms:

- Labored breathing
- lung collapse
- Hypoxemia
- acidemia

Risk factors:

- Perinatal asphyxia
- Cesarean birth in the absence of preceding labor (related to the lack of thoracic
squeezing)
- Male gender
- Maternal diabetes.



Potential complications:

. - Air leak syndrome
. - Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (chronic lung disease)
. - Patent ductus arteriosus
