What the Concept Means

Diversity in the classroom means that students come from different backgrounds,
cultures, languages, and abilities. A diverse classroom has learners who may have
different religions, family structures, and learning needs. This variety can make
the classroom a richer environment for learning because students are exposed to
different perspectives (Miller, 2019).



Example

In my schooling experience, I was in a class with students from different cultures
and languages. Some of us spoke English as a first language, while others spoke
different home languages. The teacher made sure to celebrate all cultural

,festivals and encouraged us to share about our backgrounds, making everyone
feel included.

In contrast, a lack of diversity recognition can create feelings of isolation. I once
observed a class where a student with a learning disability did not get the extra
help they needed, which made it hard for them to keep up with the lessons.



How a Life Skills Teacher Can Apply This Concept

A Life Skills teacher can include diversity by celebrating different cultures and
languages in the classroom. They can assign group projects where students share
their cultural practices or bring in materials in different languages to promote
inclusivity (Department of Basic Education, 2020)

What the Concept Means

Ethical teacher behaviour refers to the actions of a teacher that show fairness,
honesty, and respect for all students. An ethical teacher treats all learners equally,
protects their rights, and creates a safe and positive learning environment (Sachs,
2018).



Example

In my schooling experience, I had a teacher who was very ethical. She never
showed favoritism and always gave every student the chance to speak in class.
She also kept personal information about students confidential.

On the other hand, I observed a situation where a teacher publicly embarrassed a
student for failing an exam. This behaviour was not ethical because it made the
student feel ashamed and did not respect their dignity.

A Life Skills teacher can implement ethical behaviour by ensuring they treat all
learners fairly, maintain confidentiality, and promote a positive environment
where students feel respected and supported (Sachs, 2018).

1.1.3 Positive attachment figures

What the Concept Means

A positive attachment figure is someone, usually an adult, who provides
emotional support and security to a child. Children who have strong attachment
figures, such as parents or teachers, feel safe and confident to explore and learn
(Bowlby, 1988).



Example

During my school years, I had a teacher who always took time to listen to
students' problems and provided emotional support. This made me and my
classmates feel comfortable and secure, knowing we had someone to turn to.

In contrast, a friend of mine went to a school where teachers were distant and
cold. This lack of attachment figures made students feel disconnected and
unsupported.



How a Life Skills Teacher Can Apply This Concept

A Life Skills teacher can become a positive attachment figure by being
approachable, listening to students' concerns, and providing emotional support.
They can create a nurturing environment where students feel cared for and
understood (Bowlby, 1988).
