Background
The business
The Four Winds Bar in Belfast is a sports bar and restaurant with panoramic city views. It used to be a
huge establishment, with a bar, restaurant and function rooms, however, the Covid pandemic has led to
reduced staff numbers. Currently, there are 10 bar staff, 3 duty managers and the manager working
behind the bar. The bar tenders also typically pick up the jobs of waiters, with managers doing a lot
more of the administrative work. The Bar a wide range of suppliers for the range of drinks on the menu.
The bar prides itself on the wide range of alcoholic beverages on sale, with over 15 different gins on
offer, many cocktails and a wide selection of whiskies. The bar receives over £10,000 in sales on an
average Saturday or Sunday with hundreds of customers visiting both locally and from far. The bar is
usually buzzing on Saturday nights, with live music on, and a busy atmosphere. This means on Saturday
nights there can be a long wait at the bar, and this leaves customers standing, queuing, and away from
their friends for extended periods of time.
The problem
The problem lies in the ineffectiveness of the current app to order drinks to tables and as a result
nobody uses it, leading to huge queues at the bar. The app is unable to add or remove items from the
menu or change prices of products. This means it is outdated and customers are ordering drinks that
aren’t available. Another issue is the app only prints one paper copy of the order to the bar staff, and
there is no digital storage of the order. This means no analysis of sales can take place and any orders
lost are lost forever. In addition, the app doesn’t save customer data, so for each order the customer
must input all their details, which is laborious, and customers find this too much effort just to order,
subsequently ordering at the bar. The app simply doesn’t function effectively enough for it to be used.
