CASE STUDY: Rhulani
I am a sucker for horror and supernatural movies and a fan of metal rock and hip-hop music. Being a
South African teenager comes with its ups and downs. Sometimes it becomes a living nightmare
because there is not a single day that a person like me does not face discrimination unless we spend
our time indoors. This is because I was born with a medical condition called albinism. Growing up and
now as a teenager I’ve been called names such as “mlungu”. People also point at me and will say
things like I bath with milk. I once had an emotional breakdown, but through the support of my
parents, I overcame it.
1.1 Investigate the challenges faced by individuals with albinism and discuss the impact these
difficulties can have on their daily lives. [5]
Individuals with albinism face a multitude of challenges in their daily lives, ranging from social
discrimination to physical health issues. One of the most common difficulties they encounter is
dealing with the negative stereotypes and stigmatization associated with their condition. They are
often subjected to name-calling, teasing, and bullying, which can have a profound impact on their
self-esteem and mental well-being. Additionally, people with albinism may also struggle with vision
problems, such as photophobia and poor eyesight, which can further hinder their ability to navigate
the world around them.
The discrimination and harassment encountered by individuals with albinism can also have
significant social and psychological implications. It may lead to feelings of isolation, alienation, and a
sense of not belonging, as they struggle to fit in with their peers. This can adversely affect their social
development, leading to difficulties in making friends and establishing meaningful relationships.
Furthermore, the constant exposure to negative attitudes and behaviors towards their condition can
result in anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.
The challenges faced by individuals with albinism can also extend to practical matters, such as access
to adequate healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. They may encounter barriers in
receiving proper medical attention for their vision impairment and other related health concerns. In
educational and professional settings, they may face discrimination and limited opportunities for
advancement due to misconceptions about their abilities and limitations.
