What does an organization stand to gain if it can work through the growing pains of
implementation?
Work-life balance initiatives are policies and practices implemented by a firm to help its
employees to achieve a better balance between the demands of their job and their life outside of
work (CCOHS, 2022). These initiatives help employees in many aspects and they also benefit
the employer. Implementation of good work-life balance policies and practices helps employees
to become more productive, reduce absenteeism, reduce stress, and become more motivated.
This would help the company attract diverse and more qualified professionals, increase
employee loyalty and commitment, improve customer service, and enhance competitiveness. It
will also build a better relationship between employer and employee making staff retention
easier. This will, in turn, reduce recruitment and hiring costs and builds a brand image that
attracts more qualified professionals (Effectivespend, 2017).
Implementing work-life balance policies and practices may incur the additional short-term cost
and complicates human resource management. Additionally, it might face backlash from
management and some employees. Despite these and other difficulties implementing work-life
initiatives will have a long-term advantage presented above. The purpose and benefits of these
initiatives need to be discussed by management and employees first before implementation to
make a smooth transition.
Have you worked as an employee—have you worked for an employer that offered work-life
policies? How were they implemented? Were you able to use them? Discuss your
experiences as they relate to what you’ve read.
I used to work for a company in the financial sector that has implemented work-life balance
initiatives. These include policies and practices provided to employees and management to
improve the balance between work demands and healthy outside life. They include education
leave, company days out, free exercise classes, and a subsidized canteen.
The education leave helps employees do a postgraduate degree with reduced stress and the free
exercise classes help employees become more healthy and full of energy. The subsidized canteen
helps employees save money and drive long-distance during lunchtime. All of these help the firm
to have employees that are healthier, motivated, more qualified, and loyal. Based on this I can
conclude that work-life balance policies and practices will help the firm in the long-run even if
there are some challenges during implementation.
