Negative effects of widespread antibiotic use:
1. Multidrugresistant pathogens
2. Reduced efficacy o
3. Rising rates of Clostridioides difficile colitis
Hospital associated infections, many of which are caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Cultures should be sent prior to starting antibiotics so that the drugs will not reduce the
likelihood of isolating the causative organism.
Selective toxicity (i.e., selective inhibition of the growth of the microorganism without damage
to the host)
