I got an 8.5 grade for this! This midterm paper analyzes the self-chosen case study of Ngozi Fulani's encounter with Lady Susan Hussey; an encounter that later sparked debate and raised questions about racism in the media. The incident showcases the “but where are you really from?” discourse, which is a classic example of everyday racism as presented by Philomena Essed. I apply the theoretical framework of Essed and use the principles of symbolic interactionism to analyze this incident. Word-limit: 1200 words

, Introduction
This paper analyzes the incident that unfolded in 2022, when Ngozi Fulani, the founder of
the charity Sistah Space, attended a reception hosted by Queen Camilla at Buckingham
Palace to raise awareness as part of the ‘16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based
Violence’ (Davies & Summers, 2022). An incident that later sparked debate and raised
questions about racism in the media.

During the event, Ngozi Fulani engaged in a conversation with Lady Susan Hussey, the
late queen’s lady-in-waiting and a close confidante of the royal family. What began as a
seemingly ordinary interaction took a turn as Lady Hussey repeatedly questioned Fulani
about her origins, heritage, and nationality, despite Fulani having clarified that she was a
British national. This persistent line of questioning left Fulani and bystanders who
witnessed this encounter speechless (Davies & Summers, 2022). The following day, Fulani
used Twitter to publish the alleged transcript of a conversation she claims to have had with
Lady Susan Hussey and how it left her feeling violated and discriminated against (Sistah
Space, 2022).
