Carlota García Gimeno

, Feudal Europe:
FEUDAL SYSTEM: From the 9th and 10th centuries, a political, social and
economic system called “Feudalism” developed in Western Europe. This
system survived until the Early Modern Period.
Chronology: From the 9th to the 13th centuries
Causes of the appearance of the Feudal system:
From the 9th century Western Europe lived under a climate of violence and
insecurity caused by:
• The fragmentation of the Carolingian Empire and the Second Invasions.
• The desire of the Nobles to increase their power, which often led them
to fight each other and attack the free peasants to seize their land.
• The weakness of monarchies prevented kings from forming their own
armies so they could only pacify their kingdoms by relying on Nobles
and Knights. To do this they established a feudal or vassal pact with
Nobles through which they obtained their loyalty in exchange for land.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FEUDAL SYSTEM
The King lost power and authority and shared them with the clergy and nobility
The society was divided into closed groups. It included a minority formed of
nobles and clergymen who enjoyed privileges.
The economic system was based on Peasants (siervos, campesinos que no
eran libres, eran siervos de la gleba) working on the land. The king and the
privileged groups appropriated parts of the peasants ́ production. They had to
do what the Lord said, once a week they worked for free to de Lord’s lands.
