GIS notes lectures:
17 april: GIS introduction:
First law of geography: everything is related to everything else, but near things are more
related than distant things.
GIS is useful for answering questions about geographic:
- Location, position of phenomenon on the surface of the earth
- Distribution, describes how phenomena are spread across the surface of the earth
- Association, refers to how things are related to each other in space
- Interaction, describes the linkages and relationships between places
- Change, refers to the persistence, transformation, or disappearance of phenomena
on the earth
Spatial data: information about location, like your home
Attribute data: extra information, like age or course program
19 april: computational thinking:
,
, 21 april: cartography:
Modern cartography:
- 17th, 18th and 19th century there were improving methods for measurement and
national map programmes
- In the 20th and 21st century there came thematic maps, WW’s led to aerial
photography, GPS, remote sensing and dynamic maps.
