I BTEC Applied Science I Chemistry I Unit 4 I Learning Aim A I Health and Safety In Scientific
Organisations I
Introduction :-
In this assignment, I will investigate and assess the legalization of scientific organizations' health and
safety. Particularly where mass-produced goods are produced and the organization's development site I
will investigate whether the two scientific organizations are following protocols for relevant health and safety
legislation, inspecting the factory for any risks, ensuring employee safety within the organization, and
providing safety equipment.

Legislation in Health and Safety In Two Scientific Organisations: Scientific Organisation : Johnson
& Johnson - Pharmaceutical Company :-
A global network of open innovation ecosystems that enable creators to bring ideas to life. It’s one of the
world's largest health care and highest-paid drug companies. Still, it remains at the top of the Big Pharma
list of powerful corporations, with more than $82 billion in annual revenue in 2020. Johnson & Johnson is
an American international corporation that has 250 subsidiary companies with operations in 60 countries
and products sold in over 175 countries. [1] They will have worldwide sales of $82.6 billion during the year
2020. It was founded in 1886 by Robert Wood Johnson, James Johnson, and Edward Mead Johnson,
along with fourteen other employees, to develop medical devices and consumer packaged goods. [1]

Johnson & Johnson aims to improve accessibility to create healthier communities and reach everyone
around the world to have a healthier mind, body, and environment. to improve people’s health and
wellness. [2] That’s why they try to make their products meet or exceed the approved regulations of
whatever they sell. Johnson & Johnson's main divisions are pharmaceutical, medical devices, and
consumers. [3] The pharmaceutical company is where they develop and deliver medicines and meet needs
around the world. Medical devices are where they deliver new innovations and newly invented technologies
that provide healthcare professionals and consumers with everyday uses. Consumers are where brand
innovators and healthcare solutions that help people live healthier lives are offered and reviewed. [8]

Healthy and Safety : Johnson & Johnson ;-
Pharmaceutical companies investigate diseases, conduct research, and develop new medicines and drugs
to treat them. Pharmaceutical companies create drugs for legalized medications, mostly to cure and
vaccinate people. [4] So, symptoms can be reduced. Reduced demand for prescribed medication, increased
competition from other pharmaceutical companies, pharmaceutical fraud, and rising consumer expectations
are the major risks affecting pharmaceutical companies. These factors are massively affecting
pharmaceutical companies. [4]

Pharmaceutical manufacturers and employees face some severe and real health and safety issues. In
pharmaceutical manufacturing, the hazards are very specific. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use hazard
controls and risk mitigation techniques that are common in other industries, such as pharmaceutical safety
training and the use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all levels of the control hierarchy. [7] The
most general health and safety hazards in pharmaceutical companies are flammable or combustible
materials, hazardous chemicals, biological hazards, ergonomic strain in uncomfortable working positions,
and other lab safety hazards (e.g., broken glass shards). This implies dealing with hazards in the workplace
that negatively affect employees' working conditions. [7]

Pharmaceutical industries use the same basic safety precautions, management systems, risk
management, hazard identification, control safety observation, reporting programs, accidental
investigations, and safety and health training. This is because there shouldn’t be any inconveniences in the
future and no risk to the health and safety laws in the industry. [9] Health and safety training, safe lab
operations, good hygiene and manufacturing practices, quality assurance, proper laboratory equipment
handling technique, and appropriate use of PPE in the laboratory and environment all benefit

, pharmaceutical manufacturing employees. As a result, they will be able to prevent any accidental causes
and plan for safety measures. [9]

What does the Graveney Science Department do, what legalization is relevant to the organisation,
and where is it used?
Graveney Science is a department in our secondary school. They are members of the ASE (Association for
Science Education). Where 11,000 members (including laboratory technicians, teachers, and education
advisors) publish several well-known journals. [5] For example, education in science The department
safeguards the science committee and advises its members on health and safety matters in the science
department. CLEAPSS offers advice to employees on all aspects of practical science, even health and
safety precautions. Also included is a risk assessment of all equipment, liquid, solid, and gaseous matter,
as well as other materials. [5]

In the school community, special and voluntary controlled schools The governors are the employers and
have the responsibility to take health and safety seriously during the work period. Pupils might be affected
by their actions. School health and safety aren’t expected to be involved in their day-to-day health and
safety management around the school. [10] The head of department and subject teachers provide health and
safety guidance and risk assessments for those to whom health and safety tasks have been delegated
equally. Graveney's Science Department serves as a resource for students, technicians, teachers, and
other staff members. So, it can help them in future laboratory experiments or for theoretical ideas about
health and safety in experiments. [10]

Main Hazards In Johnson and Johnson:-
In pharmaceutical companies such as Johnson & Johnson, health and safety managers and industrial
hygienists protect employees and workers from operational environmental hazards that endanger their
health and safety and have an impact on their personal and professional lives. [6] There are common
hazards that occur in industrial manufacturing or the laboratory. These hazards are:-
- Glassware: Fragile laboratory equipment that can easily break. [11]
- Formulation and packaging: It is recommended that PPE equipment should be used to protect
workers from harmful hazards. This is because accidents can happen during the manufacturing and
packaging processes. Chemical hazards, biological hazards, radiation, and other factors, for
example, can all have an impact on health and safety regulations. [11]
- Airborne hazards: During the manufacturing process, dust, gases, and vapours are likely to be
produced and processed. This is a limitation that can impact the respiratory system and cause
breathing problems. [11]
- Noise pollution: Loud and dangerous noises can endanger a worker's hearing and limit their ability
to communicate in the workplace. This is a permanent hazard that jeopardises hearing protection. [11]
- Fire hazard: Any type of situation can generate a fire and generate explosions. [11]
- Biological hazards: The use of bacteria, viruses, human or animal blood samples, tissue samples,
or body fluids in experiments to study their biological structure or mechanism; they are easily
transportable. [11]
- Hazardous Chemicals: These harmful chemicals can be corrosive to the eyes, mouth, and skin.
Acids, alkalis, halides, and phenols are examples of such substances. They are easily spilled on the
workbench or floor, and if a person comes into contact with them unknowingly, it will result in
chemical burns. [11]
- Toxic chemical inhalation: Inhaling toxic fumes or corrosive chemicals can cause severe irritation
to the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs' membranes. [11]
- Chemical contamination: Harmful chemicals can be easily ingested from laboratory equipment,
contaminated food or drinks, or dirty hands. To kill any germs or bacteria, it is best to restrict access
to food and drinks in the workplace, sterilise laboratory equipment, and maintain hand hygiene. [11]
- Laboratory environment: Many accidents and injuries can occur as a result of certain obstacles in
the laboratory or classroom due to students' disregard for their health and safety. This means that if
