Gram-negative vs Gram-positive cell walls




 Gram-negative bacteria have greater concentrations of peptidoglycan meaning their
walls are thinner. They have channels rather than pores to allow the flow of
molecules.
 And gram-positive bacteria do not have an outer membrane but have a thicker wall
that is somewhat porous due to its barbed wire-like structure.
Peptidoglycan




 A polymer made of two monosaccharide units.
 NAM and NAG
 Short polypeptide chains form between these chains known as Cross Links
Transpeptidase
 Membrane-bound enzyme.
 Forms cross-links in the peptidoglycan
