Een verstoring van de afstemming van opbouw en afbraak van koolhydraten, vetten en
eiwitten in en tussen lever-, spier- en vetcellen treedt vaak op, onder andere bij patiënten
met kanker. Dat belemmert de therapie en veroorzaakt veel comorbiditeit.

ATP
ATP wordt gevormd door oxidatieve afbraak van biologische brandstoffen. De vorming van
ATP gebeurd in twee stadia:
1. Hierbij worden NADH, NADPH2 en FADH2 gemaakt;
2. Hierbij worden de gevormde energie gebruikt voor
de productie van ATP.

NADH en FADH2 ontstaan door de opname van energierijke
elektronen (reductie).

Oxidatieve fosforylering
De energie die opgeslagen is in NADH wordt gebruikt
om een protonen gradiënt te creëren. Vervolgens
wordt de energie van deze protoenen gradiënt
gebruikt om ATP te synthetiseren. Dit proces heet
oxidatieve fosforylering.

Citroenzuurcyclus
De vorming van NADH ontstaat uit de
afbraak van acetyl-CoA.
