Policing and Crime Prevention: The focus of this assignment is on the multi-agency approach to policing and preventing crime. Part 1: For years and more so recently, policing must have a multi-tasking approach and the police must not simply focus on law enforcement, but should help address a wide range of problems, including those that give rise to crime and criminality. Policing could be described as a multi-agency approach that is advocated through community policing and that police officers could rely on other professionals who may be better suited to address such societal problems, such as social workers, victim advocates, youth workers, and other social type workers. Within the context of this multi-agency approach to policing and community policing, do you believe that police should stay focused on what they do best (enforcing the laws, responding to calls for service, arresting offenders) and allow their social affiliates to focus on the social problems that give rise to crime? Also, consider the segments of society and the movements that are proposing to ‘Defund the Police’ and spend police budgets on community programs and social workers to resolve certain social problems, rather than the police addressing the issues and problems. Part 2: Alternatively, do you believe that the police should engage in problem-oriented policing involving tasks that fall outside their law enforcement duties and mandates (and be to some aspect social workers)?
