The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020: This code consolidates 13 previous laws on various aspects of working conditions, such as factories, mines, construction, contract labour, inter-state migrant workers, working journalists and cinema workers. It aims to provide for a safe and healthy work environment, regulate working hours and leave, ensure social security benefits and welfare facilities, and protect the rights of vulnerable groups1. The Code on Social Security, 2020: This code consolidates nine previous laws on social security schemes for workers, such as provident fund, employees’ state insurance, gratuity, maternity benefit, unorganised workers’ social security and pension. It aims to extend social security coverage to all workers, including gig workers and platform workers, establish a national social security board, create a fund for unorganised workers and provide for portability of benefits1. The Industrial Relations Code, 2020: This code consolidates three previous laws on trade unions, industrial disputes and industrial employment. It aims to promote harmonious relations between employers and workers, facilitate collective bargaining, regulate recognition of trade unions, streamline the process of dispute resolution and arbitration, and reform the laws on strikes, lockouts and retrenchment1. Some other important labour laws in India include: The Factories Act, 1948: This act regulates the health, safety and welfare of workers in factories. It prescribes standards for lighting, ventilation, cleanliness, sanitation, drinking water, canteens, restrooms, first aid and medical facilities. It also regulates working hours, overtime pay, annual leave with wages, weekly holidays and night shifts23. The Maternity Benefit Act, 1961: This act provides for paid maternity leave of 26 weeks to women employees in any establishment employing 10 or more persons. It also provides for medical bonus, nursing allowance, crèche facility and protection from dismissal or discrimination during maternity leave23. The Trade Unions Act, 1926: This act grants legal status and protection to registered trade unions. It defines the rights and liabilities of trade union members and office bearers. It also provides for the registration, cancellation and dissolution of trade unions23.
