Case Study 3
The case study that I will be doing a research on is about a woman whose son by the name
Emmanuel is asthmatic. They live in a small community housing apartment that the buildings of the
apartments are old, dusty, dirty, has mold and cockroaches all over the place. Her son Emmanuel is
five years old. Emmanuel’s mother had given him a glass of milk and later put him to bed one
evening. When Emmanuel went to bed, he suddenly woke up few minutes after his mother had put
him to bed with wheezing, shortness of breath and coughing. As he was having these symptoms, he
became very anxious. His mother hurriedly got his inhaler, but her son was too anxious and restless
to use the inhaler. Emmanuel’s became diaphoretic and became tired. His mother then dialed 911
and he was then taken to the hospital. On this case study I will talk about the answers to the case
study which are: What is the mechanism of action for corticosteroid inhaler, the difference between
the corticosteroid inhaler and B2-agonist inhaler, reason as to why a patient with asthma becomes
physically fatigued during a long asthma attack, physiological events that happen during an asthma
attack, how the body compensates for an increase in CO2 and the effects hypercapnia has on the
central nervous system.
Asthma
Asthma is a respiratory disease that obstructs the airway. This disease affects millions of
people in the united states and around the world. Asthma can be detrimental to the health if the
when the individual is having an attack and the patient is not seen in the emergency room
immediately or their inhaler is not within reach. I had once had a cousin who had an asthma attack,
she had never been diagnosed with asthma before, but the asthma just occurred because it was
triggered through cold and dust. My cousin had been complaining of feeling cold and her chest was
hurting as she would say. One morning after we all got up and did our morning
