Question 1
(Health Invention (Pty)

1.1 Identify and discuss Health Invention’s current organisational strategy according to the Miles and Snow (1978)
classification. Provide an example from the case study to justify your answer (6)
The Health Invention is currently adopting the prospector strategy.
In terms of this strategy, the organisation’s primary strategy is to search for new markets and new growth
opportunities to grow success (Coetzee et al., 2020:144).
The prospector strategy emphasises growth and new opportunities in the marketplace through innovation and
the development of new products. This strategy makes use of decentralisation of decision making and lateral
communication (Coetzee et al., 2020:144).

Example: Health Invention’s business philosophy is “affordable to be healthy”, and until recently has searched
for new markets and new growth opportunities to grow their success through the development of new products

1.2 In the case study it is indicated that Health Invention have decided to change their business.
strategy to maintain stable growth and to protect its current markets.
(a) Identify and discuss Health Invention’s new business strategy (According to the Miles and Snow classification).
Provide an example from the case study to justify your answer. (5)
Health Invention wants to adopt the defender strategy. In terms of this strategy, the organisation’s primary
strategy is to protect its existing market share, which is what is indicated in the case study. This is done by
keeping costs low through efficient internal production and tight management control, centralised decision-
making, and vertical communication (Coetzee et al.2020). An organisation that follows a defender strategy
concentrates on protecting its current markets, maintaining stable growth, and serving its customers.

(b) Differentiate between the different remuneration strategies for Health Invention’s current and new strategy.
(7)
The innovator strategy stresses new products and short response times to market trends. The objective of this
strategy is to develop unique products or services. A supporting remuneration approach places less emphasis on
evaluating skills and jobs and more emphasis on incentives designed to encourage innovation.
The cost-cutter strategy is an efficiency-focused strategy which stresses doing more with less by minimising
costs, encouraging productivity increases, and specifying in greater detail exactly how jobs should be performed.
The customer-focused strategy stresses delighting customers and bases employee pay on how well they do this.

1.3 From the case study, Health Invention has implemented career family structures. Discuss the characteristics of
such a pay structure and apply your answer to the case study. (7)
According to Coetzee et al. (2020:75), career family pay structure is a single graded structure where each grade
has been divided into job families, for example operations, finance, administration, marketing, and IT. A career
family pay structure normally has 6 to 8 levels defined by the activities carried out and/or by the knowledge and
skills or competencies needed to perform these activities. However, the levels of responsibility, knowledge, skill
or competency needed in these occupations differ.

Basically, a career structure is a single graded structure wherein each grade has been divided into career families.
Case study example: the case study clearly indicated that, health Invention uses career family structures to group
jobs of the same nature together. The various departments at Health Invention are Finance, HR, Packaging,
distribution, Logistics and Sales.
