WEEK 2: MAJORITIES AND ETHICS
In a Democracy, the majority rules but they may not take away the basic rights and freedoms of the minority. So I would say that their role is to protect the rights and freedoms of the minority so all people, regardless whether you are a minority or majority, are equal. The American Indians are brought up in topic a lot throughout history. They are a minority group. They are governed by Federal law but not necessarily state and local law pertaining to their reservations. One issue that goes back and forth is the casinos on reservations. Because they are not imposed by State law, they have been able to set up casinos all over. But States didn't agree with this because it went against their state and local gambling laws. These casinos were argued about in court but the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the American Indians. A Federal law had to be established so there were no confusion of what was and was not acceptable. So in 1988, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was established. This permitted gambling in casinos on reservations. The biggest argument was that churches and sports groups and other non-profits were permitted to host gambling events to raise money for their organizations. The Indians just wanted to raise money for the reservations (which are considered non-profit organizations). This has become a positive outcome. Yes, Indians are brought up a lot in history, but when you stop to think about it, we came and took the Indians land a long time ago, and they have been a minority for a very long time. I believe the state and local legislation shouldn't have any rights to the Indian reservations or their casinos, That is the least we could do. I'm glad they passed the law in 1988, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. Which permits gambling in casinos on reservations, I have yet to go to a casino on a reservation. And yet, the Indians are still willing to give a certain percentage to the state. Thanks for sharing.
