PERT/CPM
Program evaluation and review technique PERT and critical path method CPM
- 2 of the most wildly used tools for scheduling and control of large scale
projects
- Both techniques lead to the same conclusion
- Both techniques were involved independently and PERT was popularly
associated with probabilistic times
- By using PERT and CPM, managers are able to obtain
a. A graphical display of projects/activities and their sequential
relationships
b. An estimate of how long the project will take
c. An indication of which activities/work packages are most critical
to timely project completion
d. An indication of how long any activity/work package can be
delayed without delaying the project
PRECEDENCE NETWORK
- Some activities are independent
- Others are sequentially linked to to other activities
• They cannot be started until the immediate predecessor activities
are finished
- Precedence network
• One of the main features of PERT CPM is its use of a precedence
network to depict project activities/work packages and their
sequential relationships by use of arrows and nodes
- Under original convention:
• Arrows designate activities = activity on arrow netowork
• Arrows = rep both the activities and the sequence in which they
much be performed
◊ Ex) interview precedes hire and train
- Under new convention
• Nodes designate activities = activity on node network
• Has a start node (s in example), which is not an activity but is
added in order to have a single staring node
• Shows only sequence in which activities must be performed
• Nodes represent activities
