The DWDA enabled physicians to prescribe life- ending medications to terminally ill patients. The original DWDA required patients to wait 15 days between their initial and secondary requests. SB 579 eliminates this waiting period for patients who are likely to die within 15 days of their initial request. SB 579 also implements an exception to the 2-day waiting period for individuals with less than 2 days to live. SB 579 has no fiscal or revenue impact. Requests for lethal medication are given to physicians. If the physician believes a patient’s judgement is impaired by a psychological disorder or is otherwise incapable of making the decision to request lethal medication, the physician has the authority to deny the patient’s request. ...............
