C228 Task 1 2 C228 Task 1 B. Assessment of Needs and Risks Demographics Assessment: Sentinel City is a simulation city that this paper is based on. The material on this paper has been obtained through the simulation city and the information that was provided on the website. Sentinel City has an overall population of 634,265 (Sentinel City, 2017). The city has four neighborhoods. They are Nightingale Square, Acer Tech Center, Casper Park District and Industrial Heights. Casper Park District has the highest population at 352,643 (Sentinel City, 2017). The neighborhood with the lowest population is Industrial Heights at 38,855 (Sentinel City, 2017). Acer Tech Center has a population of 168,390 and Nightingale Square with a population of 103,974 (Sentinel City, 2017). Sentinel City has an overall ethnicity of 80.6% being Caucasian, 10.4% being African American, 31.5% being Hispanic, 2.0% being American Indian and Alaska Native alone, 3.7% being Asian, Native Hawaiian and 0.2% being Other Pacific Islander alone and 3.1% being two or more races (Sentinel City, 2017). Nightingale Square has a primary ethnicity of 81.3% being Caucasian and the secondary ethnicity being 3.7% Hispanic or Latino. Industrial Heights has a primary ethnicity of 46.8% being Hispanic or Latino and the secondary ethnicity 13.1% being African American (Sentinel City, 2017). Acer Tech Center has a primary ethnicity of 70.2% being Caucasian and 13.7% being Hispanic or Latino. Casper Park District has a primary ethnicity of 63% being Caucasian and 24% being Hispanic. (Sentinel City, 2017) Sentinel City has an overall median household income of $49,091 (Sentinel City, 2017). Nightingale Square has the highest median household income of $269,550 and Industrial Heights has the lowest median household income of $24,672 (Sentinel City, 2017) Acer Tech Center has C228 Task 1 3 a median household income of $166,300 and Casper Park District of $80,134 (Sentinel City, 2017). The percentage of Sentinel City residents that are living below the poverty level is 18.9% (Sentinel City, 2017). The percentage of non-insured residents in Nightingale Square is 0.7%, Acer Tech Center is 1.5%, Casper Park District is 22.7% and Industrial Heights is 37.5%. The percentage of persons that are 65 years and older in Sentinel City is 10.5%, in Industrial Heights it is 0.9%, in Nightingale Square it is 13.9%, in Acer Tech Center it is 19.8% and in Casper Park District it is 6.5% (Sentinel City, 2017). The percentage of persons that are under 18 years old in Sentinel City is 21.7%, in Industrial Heights it is 20.8%, in Nightingale Square it is 5.9%, in Acer Tech Center it is 7.0% and in Casper Park District it is 33.8% (Sentinel City, 2017). The percentage of persons under 5 years old in Sentinel City is 7.4%, in Industrial Heights it is 10.9%, Nightingale Square it is 2.4%, Acer Tech Center it is 4.1% and Casper Park District it is 10.9%. (Sentinel City, 2017) Neighborhood/Community Safety Inventory: The major safety hazards that were observed in Sentinel City occurred in the neighborhood of Industrial Heights. Behind the church an automobile was on fire and a trash can. The smoke coming from the fire causes air pollution. The buildings in this neighborhood were in distressed condition and appeared old. The buildings had graffiti on it. The streets were also in poor condition with cracks in the pavement which could cause car accidents and sinkholes. There was a store that had broken windows that appeared to look like a crime scene. Throughout Sentinel City stray animals were seen wandering the streets. In Casper Park District and Industrial Heights buildings had graffiti on it. Garbage was noticed throughout Sentinel City next to several buildings. Near the Redevelopment Housing Project building a spill was noticed on the sidewalk. C228 Task 1 4 In Sentinel City arrests have been made for drug use. Arrests made for cannabis were at 23% and controlled substances were at 16% (Sentinel City, 2017). EMS response times for Sentinel City are broken down into four different areas. The first is the Fire Response Team the response time for EMS is approximately 6 minutes (Sentinel City, 2017). The second is the EMS Response Team the response time for EMS is approximately 7 minutes (Sentinel City, 2017). The third is Advance Life Support the response time for EMS is approximately 7 minutes (Sentinel City, 2017). The fourth is Time to Shock the response time for EMS is approximately 6 minutes (Sentinel City, 2017). The types of crimes that occur in the Sentinel City are warrant arrests, battery, criminal trespassing, reckless conduct and public intoxication (Sentinel City, 2017). There are gang-related crimes occurring in the city (Sentinel City, 2017). Aggravated assault is the highest gang-related crime in the last four years there were hundreds of cases (Sentinel City, 2017). Simple assault comes in second, followed by robbery and homicide (Sentinel City, 2017). Windshield Survey In Sentinel City, the buildings that appear more modern are in Nightingale Square. In that neighborhood there are newer condominiums and apartments. Overall Nightingale Square appeared cleaner and visually more appealing compared to the other neighborhoods. The older buildings are in Industrial Heights followed by Casper Park District and Acer Tech Center. The majority of the buildings in Sentinel City are made from brick. As previously stated Industrial Heights and Casper Park District had graffiti and broken windows on the buildings. Also, garbage was noted next to the buildings in Sentinel City. There was a building in Casper Park District that had wood panels on the windows. Most of the buildings throughout Sentinel City are attached to one another except for buildings like City Hall. There are billboards throughout the City advertising vaccinations, no texting and driving and promoting smoking cessation.
