Traditional Work Design (Part – 2)

Henry Ford became popular for two revolutionary techniques of mass
production. He worked on coordination of work processes and smooth operation
between different departments. He applied scientific principles to jobs and
introduced a mechanized assembly line. This is known as Fordism. He reduced
wastage and inefficiency. He allocated his employees with simple tasks. Dividing
labour and using universal/common machines for production ensured certainty
about standard and quantities to be produced. He increased the speed of the
work by using mechanised inventory lines. Usage of conveyors helped
coordination. He introduced the system of control concept wherein he describes
the interdependencies between parts of organisation and its environment and
imposing a pattern on haphazard activities by improving between machines and
people amongst themselves as well.
