CDE3701
Assignment number: 02
Year: 2022
, QUESTION 1
“Children have many different interactions, which are both inside and outside of
the classroom, between both systems and individuals that are either familiar and
unfamiliar. Bronfenbrenner’s theory is based on the influence of the different
interactions that children have with everyone crossing their path. An essential
factor of the theory is that what happens in one context has an influence on what
will happen or what goes on in the next context.”
In your own words, explain why context has an impact on the development of
young children. Provide practical examples to support your answer.
Context influences the types of experiences and opportunities children
have for engaging in play, serving to determine the outcomes that members
of a culture value and nurture (Fogle & Mendez, 2006; Ogbu, 1999 ). The
sociocultural context also influences the quality of learning and the quality
of education children receive. Children belonging to a poor socio-cultural
background may not be able to make their own decisions and may lack
confidence. Children grow up in specific physical, social, cultural, economic
and historical circumstances (their socio-cultural context), all of which will
influence their childhood. Research has shown that children’s socio-cultural
context can have a large influence on their development. We know that
culture influences how children develop; across different cultures, children
can develop in quite different ways (Montgomery, 2008). To illustrate: a
child who arrives hungry at school from the parent/grandparent/caregivers’
house will act and react differently towards their friends and teacher than a
child who arrives at school after having a balanced breakfast. A child
arriving at a school from a violent environment will act and react differently
towards their peers and teacher than a child who arrives at school from a
safe and secure environment.
