Thema
Het thema van het boek is isolement en eenzaamheid. Michael, Birk en Dora
leven namelijk alleen op een eiland. Afgesloten van de rest van de wereld. De
eenzaamheid wordt alleen maar groter als Birk (de vader van Michael)
verdrinkt. Het contact dus Michael en zijn moeder wordt dan ook een stuk
slechter en ook een beetje vreemd.

Motieven
-Schuld: Michael voelt zich schuldig over de dood van zijn vader. Zijn vader ging
namelijk Michaels bal halen in de zee toen hij verdronk.
