Barriers to meeting the goal of 90% of practice being evidence-base are lack of role models, instructors, mentors, and access of facilities or equal curriculum. According to BMJ authors, 2018 journal “National surveys of EBP education delivery found that a lack of academic and clinical staff knowledgeable in teaching EBP was a barrier to effective and efficient student learning. This was echoed by findings from EBP expert interviews, which correspond that while recommended educational practices and resources are available, their uptake is somewhat limited. Effective teacher/leader education is required to improve EBP teaching quality." Another barrier that has been found is lack of understanding of what EBP. Which leads to lack of preparedness not only among nursing leaders but administration/management according to Melnyk, 2016: “The chief nurses we surveyed reported that they planned to focus on evidence-based practice as soon as they had a handle on quality and safety. That’s the disconnect – leaders think it is a competing priority when in reality, evidence-based practice is the exact mechanism that needs to be integrated in order to achieve and sustain quality and safety,” Gallagher-Ford said. "Without leadership support and engagement, it is nearly impossible for an organization to sustain a culture of evidence-based practice, the researchers said. Many hospitals stop at some education of front-line staff and fail to create leadership champions who can create an environment of success." The study found "almost half of the chief nurses surveyed were unsure of how to measure patient outcomes, “a statistic Melnyk and her team find concerning (Melnyk, 2016). “If we’re graduating nurses with graduate and doctoral degrees who have not mastered evidence-based practice – and a part of that is measuring outcomes of evidence-based practice changes – then we’re not going to have nurse leaders with that knowledge and skill set,” she said. In summary quality and safety are being placed as more important than EBP in many facilities by management and nurses when EBP should be the focus which would in turn create safety and quality in health care.
