Boekverslag Bram ter Harmsel, H4B, faceless killer
connection
The title is faceless killer, the connection with the title is that the murder case is very complex, they
don't know much about the murder only that Mr. Lövgren was clubbed and Mrs. Lövgren was left
with a rope tight around her neck and later passed away. Her last words were 'foreigners'. Shortly
after Mr. and Mrs. Lövgren are murdered, a Somali immigrant living not far away is gunned down in a
camp.
Characterization
The main character is Kurt Wallander, he has been through quite a bit in his life, his wife Mona has
left him and his daughter tried to end her life. She has also decided that she no longer wants contact
with him and removed herself from his life. He is a sober person and does not blame others for his
mistakes. He also wants to solve the mystery, so he is a go-getter.
Favorite character
My favorite character is Kurt Wallander, because he is a go-getter and eager to achieve things. I like
that he tries to change his eating habits and I also like that the colleagues support him when he has
to help his father.
Development
He tries to develop by changing his eating habits, for example. He would like to do this because his
current eating habits are not good for his health and so he is trying to develop his health and maybe
lose some weight as well. Sometimes when this fails, he remarks: “This day too was going to pass
without a change in his eating habits.”
Conflict
The most emotional conflict in which the main character ends up is that he gets a depression. He and
his wife are divorced, he has problems with his father, his daughter doesn't want to speak to him
anymore, and his daughter has even tried to commit suicide. He thinks he has been a bad father and
husband and also because of his depression he drinks a lot, he also sleeps badly. The writer ends this
by gradually building up contact with his daughter again. He also builds a relationship with a woman
but she is already married.
Ending
A closed end because the case he is working on has been completed. The murderer has been
arrested and he has good contact with his daughter again.
Setting
The places of the two murders do influence the story, who the murderer is and his origins are also
important in that story because Lövgren said Foreigners just before her death. For that a Somali was
later murdered in revenge.
